Check-in and Airport

From the online check-in window to the boarding door: the deadlines at each stage, the screening steps in order, and how boarding groups work.

Check-in is the first hard deadline of the trip. Online check-in typically opens 24 to 48 hours before scheduled departure and closes 60 to 90 minutes before; airport check-in desks close earlier, commonly 45 to 60 minutes before an international departure. Opening the online window as soon as it opens matters because seats are often allocated in check-in order, and the seats closest to the exits go first.

At the airport the sequence is fixed. Documents are checked first — passport or national ID plus the booking reference — then bags are weighed and tagged at the desk, then hand baggage goes through screening. Screening follows published instructions that differ slightly by country: liquids in a resealable bag, laptops and large electronics out of the bag, shoes and belts removed where the local authority requires it. This is the stage where most delays occur, which is why the general arrival buffers of two hours for short-haul and three for long-haul exist.

After screening comes passport control on international departures from countries that operate it, then the security re-check some airports run at the gate, and finally boarding. Boarding is called by group or zone rather than row; the group number is printed on the boarding pass. Boarding typically closes 15 to 20 minutes before the published departure time, and the door is sealed at that time — arriving at the gate after boarding has closed converts a paid seat into a rebooking conversation.

Connections follow the same logic with one addition: if your itinerary involves reclaiming and re-checking baggage, add that time to the published minimum connection time. On a single ticket with through-checked bags, the transfer is usually airside and does not require reclaiming anything. On two separate tickets, treat the second flight as a fresh purchase and build in a much larger buffer.

  • Open online check-in the moment the window opens — 24 to 48 h before departure
  • Bring passport, booking reference and any visa the destination requires
  • Pack liquids and power banks into the cabin bag before leaving home
  • Allow two hours short-haul, three hours long-haul at the airport
  • Be at the gate before the boarding group closes, not before the departure time
